Skipster & DJ Johney win India’s first-ever title at IDA World DJ Championship

Skipster and DJ Johney have secured the Show Category title at the IDA World DJ Championship 2025, becoming the first Indians to win a top honour at the internationally recognised competition. Their victory also marks India’s return to the IDA finals after almost ten years.

Regarded as one of the most competitive arenas for technical skill and creative innovation, the IDA World DJ Championship has long been a barometer for excellence in turntablism. Skipster previously made history in 2013 when he finished third at the World Finals, placing India on the global map. Twelve years later, he returned with DJ Johney to claim the top spot and signal a renewed momentum in India’s competitive DJ landscape.

The duo’s winning showcase opened with a live flute sequence that transitioned into a dynamic mix of Punjabi rhythms, Indian percussion, and contemporary global elements. The routine was noted for its precision, structure, and storytelling.

Speaking about the achievement, Skipster said the recognition reflects years of discipline and artistic growth. “Johney and I brought an original, cinematic performance to the global stage, and it resonated with the judges and the culture. This is a historic moment for India and a reminder that our artistry stands strong on the world map.”

Skipster’s influence on the Indian scene spans more than a decade, ranging from championship wins to mentorship initiatives that have supported younger artists. Johney’s rise from local practice studios in Vasai to an international title adds to the narrative of a widening talent pipeline within India’s DJ community. Their joint win sets a new reference point for what Indian turntablists can achieve on the world stage.

Skipster is a turntablist, sound designer, and producer whose work spans hip hop, R&B, Indian electronica, and experimental sound. His accolades include IDA World Champion (2025), DMC National Champion, and Red Bull 3Style National Champion. He is the creator of performance concepts such as SubbKultur and regularly mentors emerging DJs through programmes including Bootcamp Goa. He was previously seen on Amazon Prime Video’s The Remix in 2018, and his track Change Hobe Puro Scene was recently featured in the Prime Video series Do You Wanna Partner?. He is scheduled to mentor at Bootcamp Goa’s Analog Assembly from 15–20 December 2026 and perform at the Repertwahr Festival in Lucknow on December 19.

DJ Johney, now an IDA World Champion, represents a new generation of Indian turntablists. Known for high-energy sets that merge Indian and global sonic influences, his trajectory reflects the persistence and evolution that continue to shape India’s DJ culture.
