Virgin Music Group has entered into a global distribution partnership with Millennium Audios, bringing a large catalogue of Malayalam and Kerala-rooted music into its international network.
Millennium Audios’ catalogue spans devotional music, Mappila songs, film tracks and regional folk, built over more than two decades. The deal will see Virgin Music Group handle global distribution and digital support, with a focus on expanding reach outside its core regional audience.
For companies like Millennium Audios, the shift reflects a broader pattern in regional catalogues moving towards structured global distribution. As streaming continues to flatten access, older and language-specific catalogues are increasingly being positioned for diaspora and international discovery, rather than remaining local-first.
Saji Millennium, CEO of Millennium Audios said, “This partnership is a natural next step for Millennium Audios. Working with Virgin Music Group’s global reach and cutting-edge digital expertise will help us achieve our shared vision – taking Kerala’s incredible music to new audiences around the world, and creating new opportunities for the artists we work with.”
Lavanya Dass, Label and Business Development Manager for Virgin Music Group said, “Millennium Audios is home to some of the most iconic South Indian artists, including S Janaki, K S Chithra, K J Yesudas, Gopi Sundar, Ilaiyaraaja, and Kailas. This partnership brings together their unique array of diverse Indian content with our expertise in distribution and audience engagement. We’re excited to get started.”
The partnership also reflects how global distribution companies are approaching India’s regional markets. Rather than focusing only on frontline releases, there is increasing interest in catalogue-led growth, particularly in languages with strong cultural identity and consistent listening bases.
For the Malayalam music ecosystem, the next phase will depend on how effectively this catalogue is packaged and surfaced on streaming platforms, where discovery is driven as much by metadata and playlisting as by legacy value.
