IPRS & KOMCA launch Indo-Korean music collaboration programme

The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS) and the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) have announced the Indo-Korean Music Collaboration Programme. The initiative is aimed at fostering cultural exchange and creating original music that bridges Indian and Korean musical traditions.

Scheduled from November 6 to November 12, 2024, at the True School of Music, Vijaybhoomi University in Maharashtra, the event will host 15 artists—10 from India and 5 from South Korea. The participants will collaborate on songwriting, composition, production, and creative exploration. This week-long residency, called KOLAB, provides a collaborative environment for musicians to blend Indian music with Korean pop influences.

With creative guidance from music creators like Bunty Bains and Mayur Puri, the artists will engage in workshops, experimenting with cross-cultural styles and developing songs that capture the spirit of both nations.

The programme will conclude with an exclusive listening session in Mumbai on November 13, where newly created tracks will be showcased to music industry professionals. This will give the artists invaluable exposure and feedback, as well as potential commercial opportunities.

Rakesh Nigam, CEO of IPRS, highlighted the collaborative mission of KOLAB: “This partnership with KOMCA underscores our commitment to fostering cross-cultural ties and empowering artists with opportunities for international exposure and collaboration. Through KOLAB, we’re not only promoting music but also building a connected global community of creators.”

Vinay Prabhakar, Dean of The True School of Music, expressed excitement about hosting KOLAB at Vijaybhoomi University’s scenic campus, calling it “a groundbreaking step in cross-cultural collaboration and a pivotal moment for the Indian music industry.”

Bunty Bains, CEO of Bunty Bains Productions and a Creative Director for the event, added, “We’re thrilled to be curating this camp, bringing talented artists from India and Korea together to create music that honors both cultural backgrounds and crafts new artistic paths.”

KOLAB’s mission extends beyond the music created during the program—it aims to lay the foundation for enduring collaborations between the Indian and Korean music industries.
