T-Series refutes Pakistani singer Abrar Ul Haq’s plagiarism claims about ‘Nach Punjaban’

A day after the track’s launch, Pakistani singer and politician Abrar Ul Haq took to social media to accuse producer-filmmaker Karan Johar of stealing his song ‘Nach Punjaban’ that will be featured in the upcoming movie ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’. Ul Haq has threatened legal action to claim damages, posting that this is the sixth song that has been copied.

He Tweeted, “I have not sold my song “Nach Punjaban” to any Indian movie and reserve the rights to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song being copied which will not be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.”

In response, T-Series – the record label from which the song was licensed, by the filmmakers – has released a statement rejecting these allegations.

“We have legally acquired the rights to adapt the song ‘Nach Punjaban’ from the album ‘Nach Punjaban’ released on iTunes on 1st January, 2002 and is also available on #LollywoodClassics’ YouTube channel, owned and operated by @1moviebox Records Label, for the film #JugJuggJeeyo produced by @dharmamovies. All due credits shall be included across all platforms when song releases. As represented by @1moviebox Records Label the said song copyrights exclusively vest with moviebox only with all valid documents,” said the company on social media.

Additionally, in response to the singer’s tweet, Indian record label Movie Box too dismissed the Pakistani singer’s claims saying that the song, ‘Nach Panjaban’ was officially licensed for it to be included in the film; and that T-Series, Karan Johar and Dharma Productions have the legal rights to use the song in their film. Movie Box also called Ul Haq’s Tweets defamatory and unacceptable.

However, in spite of these public statements, the Pakistani singer repeated his threats of legal action and asked for legal documentation of the agreement.

‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’ stars Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and has been directed by Raj Mehta and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The film will release on June 24.
