Entertainment lawyer Priyanka Khimani, one of the most prominent legal voices in Indian media and music, has joined global contract tech startup Songpact as Co-Founder and Strategic Advisor. The move signals a growing push to modernise how contracts are created, negotiated, and managed in an industry that often lags behind in legal infrastructure.

Launched earlier this year, Songpact aims to make professional-grade music contracting more accessible and collaborative. With Khimani joining the leadership team, the company plans to accelerate global expansion and tailor its platform for use in emerging markets, including India and South Asia.

Khimani, who has been at the centre of several high-profile negotiations across music, film, and streaming, brings decades of frontline experience to the table. Her appointment reflects Songpact’s wider focus on building creator-first solutions that keep pace with the industry’s increasing speed, scale, and complexity.

“The music industry doesn’t have a talent gap — it has an access and affordability gap,” said Khimani. “Contracts are the foundation of one of today’s most valuable asset classes, yet so many creators remain shut out of the process. Songpact is a chance to change that — to make business affairs more intuitive, inclusive, and scalable.”

Khimani has consistently advocated for artist rights and equitable frameworks in India’s entertainment industry. She also sits on the boards of Songtradr and Beatdapp, and leads Women of Music India (WoMI), a non-profit focused on empowering women in music. In 2025, she was named to Billboard’s Top Music Lawyers list, following her inclusion in Billboard’s Women in Music in 2023.

“Priyanka’s track record speaks for itself,” said Nick Weaser, Songpact CEO and Co-Founder. “She brings unmatched clarity on the legal and cultural barriers creators face — and the systems that need to be built to support them. With her on board, we’re not just building tools. We’re building trust.”

The announcement comes as legal innovation in music remains fragmented. While deal volumes are growing and rights become more complex, many independent artists and labels still rely on outdated contracting processes. Songpact hopes to address that with a platform that enables users to generate, collaborate on, and sign contracts in minutes — without sacrificing legal rigour.

For Khimani, the goal is to reimagine business affairs as a service layer that keeps pace with creators. “Access shouldn’t be a privilege. It should be the norm,” she said.
