The .MUSIC registry has officially launched the .music top-level domain, along with its associated MusicID, offering a new verified digital identity for the music community.
Musicians, creators, songwriters, and industry professionals can now register their own .music domains on a first-come, first-served basis. This domain is aimed at providing a secure and authentic digital identity for individuals and organizations within the music industry.
The .music domain is only available to verified members of the global music community, a move that comes in response to concerns about AI deepfakes, voice cloning, and the unauthorized use of intellectual property. By verifying domain holders, the .music domain will help fans easily identify content created by legitimate artists and creators.
“For the first time, the global music industry can secure their unique .music domain and verified digital identity,” said Constantine Roussos, CEO of .MUSIC. “This new domain and its connected MusicID will provide a trusted, secure, and authentic space online where the music community can engage and thrive.”
Marina Roussou, Executive Director of id.MUSIC, the exclusive identity provider for .MUSIC, added, “The launch of .music represents a crucial step for the industry to reclaim control of their online identity. With verified MusicIDs, we are empowering the global music community to safeguard their digital presence from impersonation, fraud, and misuse by AI.”
id.MUSIC serves as the exclusive identity provider for the .MUSIC domain, ensuring that all domain holders go through identity verification. This prevents impersonation, fraud, and AI-generated clones, offering protection for name, likeness, and voice intellectual property rights.
The .MUSIC initiative has garnered support from a large international music coalition, reportedly representing over 95% of global music consumption. Victoria Oakley, CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), noted, “.MUSIC will strengthen trust and authenticity within the global music community.”
David Israelite, President and CEO of the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), praised the initiative, saying, “The .MUSIC domain arrives at a critical moment, providing much-needed protection for creators in the face of evolving AI threats.”
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that “.MUSIC will foster greater trust and security for the entire music ecosystem, especially as the industry evolves.”
Dr. Richard James Burgess, President and CEO of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), added that “.MUSIC will create a safe and innovative ecosystem that supports artists, labels, and music consumers alike, reinforcing the music industry’s vision for a stronger, more unified future.”
