PDL partners with ACRCloud to detect AI music and unauthorised track edits

Phonographic Digital Limited becomes the first in India to deploy AI music detection technology through a partnership with ACRCloud.

Phonographic Digital Limited (PDL) has partnered with ACRCloud to integrate new audio identification tools aimed at improving how altered and AI-generated music is detected across its distribution network.

The partnership will see PDL adopt ACRCloud’s Derivative Works Detection and AI Music Detection technologies as part of its content verification and licensing workflows, as distributors and rights holders face growing challenges around synthetic audio, manipulated recordings and catalogue integrity.

The move comes at a time when digital platforms are increasing scrutiny of the content being uploaded to their services. Streaming platforms including Apple Music and Deezer have introduced measures designed to address issues such as stream manipulation, AI-generated content and unauthorised recordings, placing greater responsibility on distributors and rights organisations to ensure the accuracy of the music they deliver.

ACRCloud’s derivative-content detection technology is designed to identify copyrighted recordings even when they have been significantly modified through remixes, mashups, pitch adjustments or speed alterations. Its AI detection system, meanwhile, analyses audio recordings to distinguish between human-created and AI-generated music.

For PDL, which works with labels and rights owners across licensing, royalty collection and digital distribution, the integration is intended to strengthen content verification processes and improve the accuracy of usage reporting provided to rights holders.

The development reflects a wider shift across the music business as distributors and collecting organisations adapt to an increasingly complex content environment. The rise of generative AI tools, alongside growing volumes of user-generated and derivative content, has created new challenges around ownership, attribution and royalty allocation.

As a result, music companies are investing more heavily in technologies capable of identifying content at scale and flagging potential issues before recordings reach digital platforms.

According to the companies, the integration will support PDL’s ability to track usage across a broader range of content types while helping maintain accurate attribution and royalty reporting for rights holders.

Commenting on the partnership, Peng Dong, co-founder of ACRCloud, said the company’s technologies were developed to address the compliance and verification requirements increasingly being introduced by major streaming services.

Prashant Dogra, CEO of Phonographic Digital Limited, said the partnership would help strengthen the company’s ability to validate music usage data and improve the accuracy of reporting and royalty distribution for rights holders.
