Excel Entertainment has launched Excel Music, a dedicated music label that marks the production house’s entry into the recorded music business. Universal Music Group (UMG) has come on board as a strategic shareholder, while also handling the label’s marketing and distribution.
The label’s first release will be the soundtrack for Mirzapur: The Movie, which is slated to hit cinemas on 4 September 2026. Its lead single, featuring Haryanvi artist Dhanda Nyoliwala in his Bollywood debut, is scheduled for release later this week.
Known for films such as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, Rock On!!, Karthik Calling Karthik, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, Baar Baar Dekho, Raees and Gully Boy, Excel Entertainment has built a strong catalogue of film music over the past two decades. With the launch of Excel Music, the company is extending that legacy into a standalone label business.
In addition to releasing soundtracks and scores from Excel Entertainment’s own productions, the label plans to work with other filmmakers and production houses across India.
Commenting on the launch, Excel Entertainment founders Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar said, “Music has always held a special place in our creative journey. Launching Excel Music is a natural extension of that passion, and we’re excited about the possibilities it brings. We look forward to collaborating with some of the finest creative talent and creating music that resonates with audiences across generations.”
Sanujeet Bhujabal, Managing Director, India & South Asia, Universal Music Group, added, “Excel Entertainment has shaped contemporary Hindi cinema for over two decades through storytelling that has resonated across generations. As strategic partners in the company we are delighted to partner with Excel on the launch of Excel Music and help build a distinctive destination for exceptional music across genres.
“Leveraging Universal Music’s global artist roster, iconic catalogue, and world-class marketing and distribution capabilities, we look forward to taking Excel Music to audiences across India and around the world.”
The launch comes at a time when film studios are increasingly looking to strengthen control over their music IP, with soundtrack ownership and long-term catalogue value becoming an increasingly important part of the entertainment business.
