When Audio meets Visuals: Five Musical Groups into live audio-visual space



How does it sound when you just have to come in with your original songs and a bunch of talented people record and shoot your song in a studio setting. Oh and later upload it on their YouTube channel or portals. Your song reaches out to the world. That’s what you dream of as a musician. Have a look at these exceptional groups from India who are taking the live audio-visual experience a notch higher.

Friday Night Originals

The brainchild of Abhibroto Mitra and Durjoy Choudhury, Friday Night Originals is a Non-Profit Organisation, a venture by Kolkata-based A432 Productions. The squad works for original and independent music, where musicians/songwriters/bands can showcase, promote their original compositions, which are recorded, shot and produced by the FNO team. The recorded materials are aired to a global audience through their YouTube channel since March 2016. They have featured The Bodhisattwa Trio, The Rohan Ganguli Trio, Dhruv Visvanath, Paloma and Adil, Nikhita Gandhi, Neel Adhikari among others.

FNO has already produced 56 episodes, over three 16-episode Seasons and two 4-episode Short Series. Friday Night Originals: Season IV is about to start and will broadcast in July 2018. Alongside in the Fourth Season, they are also planning to record buskers/street musicians from Melbourne, Australia for a short 4-episode series, “FNO Melbourne Street Diaries 2018”. Watch out!

USP: They boast of a high-quality audio and video production for a professional live audio-visual experience. Unlike many present-day music organisations, they do not charge a single penny for the productions, from the featured artist/s. Starting from recording, shooting, mixing-mastering, editing, all cost involved in the production is borne by them.

The Muse Room

The Muse Room is one of the best things that could happen to Kochi’s indie music scene. They started as a great venue for music, where you get to listen to musicians up close and connect with the music intimately. The place is set up beautifully so that the ambience, décor, exceptional curation of artists, well-balanced sound engineering, all enhance the listening experience. The Muse Room is equally a music conservatory, production studio as they feature Live videos, artist interviews and tons of other interesting stuff. Bands/musicians like When Chai Met Toast, Dhruv Visvanath, Harish Sivaramakrishnan, Nush Lewis, Daira, Govind Menon have showcased their music at The Muse Room in the past.

USP: The dedicated team to assist you, its unmatched sound mastering, the intimate nature of every gig that occurs here, the ambience and the listening culture of course. All the performances are mostly recorded and released weekly on their YouTube channel, which works as an artist portfolio as well.

Kadak Nights & Kadak Sessions

Started by Tejas Menon and Krish Makhija in 2014, Kadak Apple Records is largely an indie music label based in Mumbai. Apart from that, the label organises house concerts named ‘Kadak Nights’, a live music series to showcase independent musicians in nice surroundings and wide-ranging sound in a perfect way. All at once, the label also started ‘Kadak Sessions’, a web series featuring talented musicians through High-Definition video and audio. By collaborating with Mosambi Juice Productions, The Kadak Sessions have preserved the live vibe of the jam in-house arrangement featuring musicians like Warren Mendonsa aka Blackstratblues, Short Round, Prateek Kuhad, Dhruv Visvanath among others. ‘Kadak’ indeed.

USP: Their videos indicate how much they love the artists they showcase at Kadak Nights and Kadak Sessions. Follow the ‘Kadak’ mantra: If you love them too, let others know.

Tehelka: The Music Project

Tehelka TV’s The Music Project is a series of video portraits, documenting independent music in the country. Started in June 2010, the idea was small, intimate, and featured a host of artists from a range of genres. Aiming to capture distinctly spontaneous flavours, Tehelka Music Project has featured musicians/bands like Four2six, a Folk Rock band from Delhi Chaar Hazaari, Kavya Trehan, The Supersonics, Peter Cat Recording Co., Hari & Sukhmani among others. It’s been long folks, come back with those cherished ones.

USP: To take musicians outdoor studio spaces and to record wholly raw, acoustic, unplugged sounds.

Founded in 2004 by Sastry Karra, Sonya Mazumdar, Yotam Agam and Kris Karra, EarthSync is primarily a record label. They are also an audio-visual production company, with an appetite for unique music collaborative ventures. Over the last five years, EarthSync has produced award-winning music documentaries, albums, and live shows.

USP: The studio has its own in-house high-end recording studio and a fully equipped design and video suite.
