As we near the end of what has been almost a watershed year for the music industry, we take a look at one of the stakeholders of the industry that not only survived but witnessed a rise in its popularity and usage- music streaming platforms.
While the world was locked in their homes, the major source of entertainment for most were the music streaming platforms. The platforms were quick to adapt to the challenges raised by the pandemic and were fairly successful with innovative additions to their existing content curation methods.
In this year-end series we shall take a look at the artists, songs and albums which ruled the music streaming platforms in India 2020.
First up we feature one of India’s and the world’s leading music streaming platform, Spotify.
“2020 was a year like no other, and through it all, India reflected gratitude, compassion, and small things that made them happy. All of these emotions are the foundation of this year’s local Wrapped campaign, ‘#2020Wrapped, on a good note’,” said Neha Ahuja, Head of Marketing – India, Spotify.
Continuing their reign from last year as India’s most-streamed artists on Spotify, Arijit Singh, Tanishk Bagchi, and Neha Kakkar are the top 3 most-streamed artists this year. They are followed by K-pop boy band BTS, and then, Pritam, both of whom have gone up the list from last year.

BTS is the only international act to feature in the top 5 artists on Spotify in India in 2020, which clearly indicates the increasing popularity of K-pop in the country.
India’s top 5 most-streamed female artists are all local, and include Neha Kakkar, Shreya Ghoshal, Asees Kaur, Tulsi Kumar, and Dhvani Bhanushali
