Initially mentored by music director Lalit, composer and singer Vishal Mishra received appreciation for his tune ‘Pyaar Ho’ in the 2017 film Munna Michael. After a couple of songs each in the soundtracks of Kabir Singh and Jabariya Jodi this year, he’s now come up with the entire score in Tushar Hiranandani’s Saand Ki Aankh.

Overall, Mishra shows a good sense of melody, variety, and orchestration, with lyricist Raj Shekhar penning some neat lines. The film is a biographical account of the lives of sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, and the music has the appropriate rustic feel.

There is a clear winner in the Asha Bhosle song ‘Aasmaa’, a sweet tune with the lines “Aasmaa ooncha hai mera tu hi choo le na, Mere saare sapne hai tere tu hi jee le na, Raat hai gehri badi par jaayegi haan jaayegi”. Rakesh Chaurasia’s flute and Ashish Jha’s tabla lend the right flavour, and Mishra’s singing on the studio version is a bonus.

Two other tracks stand out. ‘Udta Teetar’ begins with Kalyan Baruah’s rock guitar riff, but quickly transitions into a folk melody sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Jyoti Nooran. The lines “Main udta teetar laaoongi re, Jail ke bheetar laaoongi, Saand ki aankh ko paaoongi re” are sung with punch, and Darshan Doshi’s drums brim with energy.

Singer Pratibha Singh Baghel shows remarkable control on ‘Jhunna Jhunna’, and Krutika Borkar provides apt accompaniment. The song, which talks of how a woman constantly serves the men in the house, has a nice retro feel and tight rhythm, with the opening lines “Babul bhagaaye phir bhi, saiyyan sataaye phir bhi, roti pakaaye munniya”.

The other two songs affect the overall quality. ‘Womaniya’ is a shade too cacophonous and one doesn’t get the words properly. Moreover, singer Vishal Dadlani is getting typecast with the same kind of rock-flavoured songs.

Sona Mohapatra and Jyotica Tangri coordinate smoothly on ‘Baby Gold’, but what does one mean by lines like “How many times have I told told told, Baby gold gold gold?”

Barring the occasional dose of inconsistency, Mishra shows a lot of promise. Given the right breaks and choices, he should be able to deliver more often in the future.
