Kannada Music Releases from the 2nd fortnight of January 2020

It was quite a tepid couple of weeks with regard to new releases in Kannada music. Gentleman (Ajaneesh Loknath) was the only album that released during this period apart from a few singles. Here’s a look at what clicked.

Dheera Sammohagaara – Bicchugatthi Chapter 1 – Nakul Abhyankar – OSK Productions

Josi’s serene flute leads the way and the Saz (Bağlama) undertones by Subani, that shadow Anuradha Bhat’s saccharine vocals, are delightful. Krishna Kishore’s ambient & unintrusive percussions deserve mention. Nice Track.

Rating – 8/10

Apart from Nakul Abhyankar, the credits for music include Dr.Hamsalekha and Suraj as well. Suraj also is credited with the background score. It would be interesting to see if this is another multi-composer soundtrack or considering this film is titled ‘Chapter 1’, if the film is released in parts with each composer having a specific role defined.

The Bağlama is a stringed musical instrument most commonly used in and around Turkey, Azerbaijan, and other Balkan countries, is sometimes referred to as the ‘Saz’ or the ‘Cura’. Like the Western lute and the Middle-Eastern oud, it has a deep round back, but a much longer neck. It can be played with a plectrum or with a fingerpicking style.

Arare Shuruvayithu Hege – Gentleman – Ajaneesh B. Loknath – Ananda Audio

The ‘Kannalle Nooru Maathu’ portion and the strings-piano exchange in the interlude blend nicely with Vijay Prakash’s ever-dependable vocals, for this breezy track.

Rating – 8/10

‘Naduguthide’ sung by Vasishta N. Simha is interesting and will possibly make for good background material for its rock sound juxtaposed on a folksy tune with some good trumpets and percussions. ‘Yeddelo Bharathiya’ in Anthony Daasan’s voice is disappointing.

Loka Maya Bazaru – Maya Bazar 2016 – Midhun Mukundan – PRK Audio

S.P.Balasubramanyam’s energetic vocals and the Yogaraj Bhat’s quirky lyrics are the highlights of this title track that will feature a guest appearance from Puneeth Rajkumar. The trumpet led arrangements are adequate.

Rating – 6/10

Amma – Lisa – Surendranath – A2 Music

The song starts with a dedication to all mothers. The composition itself keeping with the theme has a warm tone thanks to the sweeping strings and Anuradha Bhat’s doting rendition. The ‘Amma’ chorus is lovely.

Rating – 8/10

January 2020 is general was quite uneventful for Kannada music with very limited releases and fewer hits. With Valentine’s day around the corner, let us hope for a little more cheer and colour from Sandalwood in February.
