The 1st fortnight of the new decade had limited releases for the Kannada industry. Dinga that released right at the end of December and featured here was the only complete soundtrack released during this period apart from a few customary singles, both film and non-film.
Love you Chinna – Love Mocktail – Raghu Dixit – Raghu Dixit Music
The sedate handpan (hang drum) rhythm at the beginning sets the tone for this waltzy track that features excellent vocals by Shruthi Vs & Nakul Abhyankar. Raghu adds a nice smattering of Celtic sounds in the interludes to enhance the piece further. The visuals capturing the romance of the leads are tastefully done.
Rating – 9/10
Nann Padig Naanu – Independent Release – Shivu Bhadravathi – SR Frames & Entertainments
The Sonu Nigam influence on this track and the rendition by Partha Chiranthan is quite obvious. The composition has a nice ring to it and is backed by ambient arrangements in Waltz style complemented by the guitars and the whistle. The singing is flat at places but is a decent listen overall.
Rating – 6/10
Kone Iradantha Preethige – Kaanadante Maayavadanu – Gummineni Vijay – Anand Audio
Vijay follows up the 2 lovely tracks, ‘Kaledhoda Kaalidaasa’ & ‘Yeshtu Chanda Ivalu’, that released earlier, with this immersive track sung by Vijay Prakash. For the ace singer, this is a cake walk and he bites into the contemplative melody with ease. The composer begins with the unplugged format and moves on to add some layered arrangements with the sarangi interlude and the vocal harmony (Maayavaadaroonu) working well.
Rating – 8/10
Entha Jeevana – Independent Release – Dr Abhishek Rao Kordcal – Jhankar Music
Abhishek was a participant & Semi-finalist in the Zee SaReGaMaPa (season 15) show. Accompanied by some striking visuals, this is a pleasing track, complete with neat arrangements (programmed by DJ Sharan Yavagal) that uses the title reprise effectively. Nice track!
Rating – 7/10
Sum Sumne – Dinga – Suddho Roy – Zee Music South
In what is publicized as the 1st commercial Kannada film to be shot entirely on the iPhone, this duet rides on the fantastic vocals of Sanjith Hegde and Anuradha Bhat. The arrangements compliment the track well. This track and album released at the fag end of December and showed up on streaming sites in the 1st week of January, hence featured here.
Rating – 8/10
Apart from the above, the breezy ‘Kalediro Kushigalu’ sung by Suddho himself and the brooding ‘Hogi Baruvenu Naa’ sung by Naveen Sajju are impressive compositions and deserve a mention. The title track sung by Arjun Janya is quite popular already. In all a noteworthy soundtrack that offers good variety
Suddho Roy is a Bengali music composer and this his 3rd venture in Sandalwood. His Bengali discography includes films like Badshah, Abhimaan & Panther and works for an insurance company in Bengaluru. It will be interesting to see how Suddho goes from here and I look forward to more of his work.
Despite the limited releases, the music from the 1st half of January had an interesting mix of talent with ‘Dinga’ being the standout soundtrack. In the past, the releases have ebbed and flowed. We hope the new year and decade will offer a smoother ride for the industry and fans alike.
