JioSaavn has surpassed the 100 million monthly active users (MAU’s) mark, sources close to the company has revealed. As of 29th April, 2019, JioSaavn had recorded 104 million MAUs.
It was only last week, when Gaana announced that it had reached a landmark 100 million MAUs and also claimed to be the first platform in the market to do so.
During a press conference confirming the milestone, Gaana’s Chief Executive Officer Prashan Agarwal said that the platform expects to reach 200 million MAUs in the next two years.
The music streaming space in India has certainly become more competitive, especially after the entry of big players like Spotify and Youtube Music. Homegrown companies like JioSaavn, Gaana also are among the big names when it comes to music streaming.
The price war in the Indian streaming market is on, JioSaavn and Gaana had earlier slashed their annual subscription prices by 70 percent. To counter this, Apple Music has now made its subscription more affordable at Rs 99/month. Spotify ended its Q1 2019 with 217m MAUs globally, and with over 2 million users in India. YouTube music recently crossed the 3 million users mark in India. With the pricing war and subscriber acquisition among the music streaming platforms at its peak, Music Plus had predicted that it would not be surprising to see another platform cross the 100 million MAU mark soon, which did happen eventually.
The JioMusic-Saavn merger
The JioSaavn platform is a result of a merger between Saavn and the Reliance Industries-owned, JioMusic. Announced in March, the deal valued the newly-combined service at over $1bn. In November 2018, it was revealed that JioMusic and Saavn would fully integrate and rebrand as JioSaavn.
JioSaavn is said to have a catalog of over 45 million songs. One will also find its original podcasts like #NoFilterNeha as well as Artist Originals platform. With JioSaavn Pro, which is its premium subscription, users can listen to offline music by downloading songs, ad-free music as well as high-quality audio at 320kbps.
JioSaavn Pro membership is free for 90 days or three months, after which users will need to pay Rs 99 per month to continue with Pro. JioSaavn, one of the most popular music streaming service in India, has over 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store alone.
