Prarthona – Borno Anonyo (8/10)

How often does one come across a track which is comprised of a song by a great bard and a poem written to support the overall narrative? This aesthetic song ‘Prarthona’ (meaning prayer) from the album ‘Borno Anonyo’, in the voice of Nabamita Das and Satyaki Banerjee, is touching and hope-invoking, while a monotonous thread on the ukulele is meditative. Rabindranath Tagore’s song ‘Sokatore Oi’ and a poem named ‘Abinashwar’ by Nabamita and Satyaki form the song. The sparse music doesn’t leave out anything. It is perfect as it is. The video, with its black and white pictures by Dr. Soumitra Dutta depicts the joy in ordinary lives of citizens inspite of their suffering.

 

Dugga Elo – Monali Thakur (6/10)

Dressed in a red and green saree, Monali Thakur looks the quintessential Bengali woman as she croons a joyous ‘Dugga Elo’, which translates to the arrival of goddess Durga. Released just before the four-day Durga Puja festival, it carries the perfect essences of celebration, excitement, and anticipation of a festival that Bengalis wait for the year-round. Replete with dhak beats and notes of the dotara, it is bound to make one dance while not losing the ethos of worship. The song has been produced by Zee Bangla Music.

 

Dhawno Dhanyo – Several artistes (Gumnaami) (7/10)

To say that Dwijendralal Roy’s iconic tune ‘Dhawno Dhanyo’ is eternal would be an understatement. The patriotism invoking song, which speaks of love for one’s own motherland, has been given an orchestral treatment for Srijit Mukherjee’s film ‘Gumnaami’. With powerful scenes from the movie forming the backdrop for the tenderly sung track by Ishan Mitra, Durnibar Saha, Mekhla Das Gupta, Ikkshita Mukherjee, and Winy Roy, it is moving. Indraadip Das Gupta did an impeccable with the song’s recreation, as did Shamik Chakravarty with the music programming.

 

Pindare Polasher Bon – Shreya Chakraborty (7/10)

Folk songs seem to evolve every day. With western instruments flooding the scene, fusion is inevitable. So, traditional Bengali folk instruments blend with its Western counterparts in this spirited rendition of a traditional Bengali folk tune ‘Pindare Polasher Bon’. Bass grooves dig deep over the cyclical notes on the mandolin as a plethora of percussive sounds surrounds all of it. In the middle, Shreya Chakraborty’s folk-accented voice captures the attention. Careful thought has been given to arrangement, music production and instrumentation – resulting in a complete product by music label Amara Muzik Bengali.

 

Ichaemoti Nodi – Anindya Sundar Chakraborty (4/10)

Minor arpeggiated chords on a classical guitar form a formidable backdrop for a formidable song. Talking about how a river can represent a border when it flows between two countries, the song ‘Ichaemoti Nodi’ by Anindya Sundar Chakraborty takes on topics that few dare venture into. It also talks about the lives of people intertwined with the river, which represents life. Anindya, following in the typical tradition of songwriters, presents beautiful lyrics on simple music. But his uncooked voice betrays him, revealing the hard-to-keep secret of an amateur trying to grasp the nuances of skilled performance.
