The lights, music and the euphoria of your favourite musicians performing live, is addictive. For some, it may be the most important moments of their lives. It may look glamorous and jazzy from the outside, the work that goes into putting together a music concert is not for the faint-hearted. To be able to successfully organize an event, you have to know what exactly goes into making it happen, from the right paperwork you need to gather to the permits required for your event to actually come alive. The following are the permissions required to organize a music concert in India:
Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS):
As a performing artist, having the right licenses to be on stage is tremendously important. If you are an organizer, you have to make sure that the artist you are booking for the concert is a member of the society. A license from the IPRS safeguards the artists’ creation; the society makes sure the artist gets his or her royalty. Artists have been barred from performing because they don’t have a license and so it’s important that the organizer gets this checked off his list when he is booking for a concert.
Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL):
This license deals directly with the Human Resource Development ministry in India. It’s an autonomous body and makes sure that if you’re using a popular song by another artist at a public event, you have the license to do so. For instance, all kinds of EDM artists who use recorded music will need clearance from PPL if they are to play their music for an audience in a public event. This, like the license above, is a significant one to procure if you’re organizing an event and booking an artist.
For any event that you are planning to organize with alcohol on sale, this license is mandatory, anywhere in India. Be it live music or recorded music, if the venue already has a liquor license then the organizer need not worry about it but if not, it’s his responsibility to make sure he gets this license in place before he puts on an event. Making sure the people attending the event are of legal drinking age (LDA) is also the organizer’s responsibility. Having IDs checked before entry is the best way to stop any problems from occurring during the event.
Not having this can easily be one of the reasons for the event to get destroyed. Be it in private or public, having this license will ensure that your event is legally approved. This license can be procured from the local police authorities that will decide the size of your speakers and the number of speakers you are allowed to have in the area.
For late night permissions between 11 pm – 8 am and large-scale events with more than 500 people, this is a license that is a must. Apply for this license before a 28- day consultation period.
As an organizer, if you have artists who are below 18 years of age, you have to make sure you have this license. This can be procured from the local authority. This ensures that no one except the police authorities can stop the event. Without this, the organizer could be penalized.
Commercial Tax (Entertainment Tax):
This is calculated based on the estimated number of tickets sold. The percentage of entertainment tax changes from place to place. The payment of entertainment tax has to be done well in advance. The tickets sold have to be stamped by the Commercial Tax department, without which an event that is ticketed cannot be kick-started.
Some of the other permits include NOCs for traffic clearance, fire brigade, an NOC from the police, emergency services, an NOC from the Home Ministry and visa clearance for foreign artists and NOC from music labels, if the artists performing have signed contracts with the labels.
